Do companies in India bother to do a social media check-up of recruits? What's your take on it?

I know about a few companies who do social media and general search (Google) at various stage of hiring process. At present this may be restricted to IT / ITES companies .. Most progressive minded Recruitment consultants sport a linkedin account as their USP
